Typical Outdoor Layering Guide

Never under-order materials again. Review standard construction strata layers from base excavation to final decorative surface.

Layer 1: Structural Subbase

Road Base / Crusher Run

4″ to 8″ compacted thickness of heavy angular aggregate with fines. Prevents rutting and distributes heavy wheel loads.

Layer 2: Base / Drainage

#57 Clean Crushed Stone

Clean 3/4″ fractured stone without fines. Perfect for free-draining French drains, shed pads, and permeable driveway cores.

Layer 3: Bedding Screed

1″ Coarse Bedding Sand

Uniform uncompacted coarse concrete sand screeded smooth before laying pavers. Never use stone dust or mason sand.

Layer 4: Surface Wearing Course

DG, River Rock or Gravel

2″ to 3″ decorative top dressing layer providing traction, aesthetic texture, and erosion resistance.

FAQ Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

Key guidance before ordering aggregate, gravel, and stone materials.

On average across the United States, one cubic yard of standard crushed stone or gravel weighs approximately 2,700 pounds (1.35 to 1.4 tons). Denser crushed stone containing rock dust (like crusher run or road base) weighs closer to 2,900–3,000 lbs (1.45–1.5 tons), while lighter decorative river rock averages 2,600 lbs (1.3 tons).

When loose aggregate is dumped and mechanically compacted with a vibratory plate or roller, the void spaces between particles collapse. Materials with fine particles (such as decomposed granite or crusher run) settle by 15% to 25%. If you don’t calculate compaction beforehand, your final layer depth will be significantly too thin.

Multiply your Length (in feet) × Width (in feet) × Depth (in feet, which is inches ÷ 12). This gives you cubic feet. Then divide that number by 27 (since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet). For example: a 20 ft × 10 ft patio at 3 inches depth = 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.

A standard tandem dump truck carries 10 to 14 tons (approximately 7 to 10 cubic yards of stone). A tri-axle dump truck carries 16 to 19 tons (11 to 14 yards), and a heavy quad-axle truck can carry up to 22 tons (16 yards).
